About St. Mary's College of California

St. Mary’s College of California is a private, co-educational college in Moraga, which is a small suburban community, situated 10 miles east of Oakland, an affluent suburban incorporated town in Contra Costa County, California, named in honor of Joaquin Moraga nephew of José Joaquin Moraga who was 2nd in command, after Juan Bautista de Anza. Moraga has a population of approximately 10 000 inhabitants and has been ranked 79th among wealthiest places in USA.

St. Mary’s College of California traces its roots back in 1863, when it first started as a diocesan college for boys, established by Most Rev. Joseph Alemany, OP, Archbishop of San Francisco, California. The college was taken over by the De La Salle Christian Brothers in 1868, due to the fact that Archbishop Alemany was unhappy with the archdiocese’s operation of the college and applied for assistance from Rome.

In 1889, the college was moved to Oakland, CA, across San Francisco Bay, remaining here, until 1928, when it was moved to its present location in Moraga, CA. Despite the fact that the college nearly went bankrupt during its first years of operation, it manage to pull through, growing in the renowned educational institution known today, renowned for its Liberal Arts education, Seminar and business programs, as well as for its Great Books.

The athletic teams from St. Mary’s are known as the Gaels, name which has been changed from ‘’Saints’’ in the late 1920’s, who were once known for their American football team, led by ‘’ Slip’’ Madigan, dominating the west coast football, the most notable win being in 1930, when they travelled to New York to play the athletic team from Fordham University. Almost all the varsity teams from St. Mary’s compete in the NCAA’s Division I West Coast Conference, the university recently gaining national attention for its men’s basketball program.
